Effective September 1st, 2022, the Sugar Grove Public Library District was closed on Sundays. The Sugar Grove Library District Board of Trustees approved the new hours at the 8/24/22 board meeting.
This change represented an 8% reduction in operating hours from 50 to 46 hours to help stabilize the costs of maintaining an aging facility.
The Sugar Grove Public Library District was established in 1963 and for the majority of its history, was located at 54 Snow Street, a 6,000 square foot building. The Library District opened its current 26,000 square foot building at 125 S. Municipal Drive in 2009 after the public voted yes to a building bond for $8,000,000 in 2004. However, the public voted no to a higher tax limiting rate to fund the operations of a larger facility. As the building is now 13 years old, maintenance costs continue to increase, and the Library must prepare for upcoming capital needs expenses to maintain the facility.
Between 1981 - 2014, there have been 16 failed ballot initiatives to secure an increase in operational funding. The Library District has worked to keep costs low since the last failed attempt in 2014, by relying on the most affordable vendor contracts, utilizing volunteers to assist with the daily workload, employing an all part-time staff without benefits, and consistently applying for grants. However, Library Administration has made the difficult decision that operating 6 days a week is no longer fiscally sustainable given the revenue limitations.
The Library District’s Leadership including the Library Director and Board of Trustees invites the public to review the 2022-2024 strategic plan and join in upcoming conversations this Fall about the future of the Sugar Grove Public Library District. We welcome input to help us identify how we can best support the community.
