How Do I Get a Library Card?

You will need to fill out an application, show staff a photo ID and a second proof of residency, and we'll do the rest. Visit the circulation desk at the Sugar Grove Public Library during regular library hours with your photo ID and proof of residency to register for a library card. All patrons must be present to be issued a card, so make sure if you're applying for your kids that you bring them with.
Getting a library card is a quick process when you're prepared! You can get started now by filling out an application. Print and bring this application with you or email it to our Circulation department, then come into the library with your ID and proof of residency to complete the process.
All registrations must be completed on the Library premises or in the presence of a Library staff member.
Who is Eligible for a Library Card?
Residents of Sugar Grove Township and Blackberry Township south of Seavey Road, except those areas annexed by North Aurora to the northeast and Aurora to the east may obtain a library card from the Sugar Grove Public Library District (SGPL).
Children must be at least 5 years of age to be eligible to receive a library card. A parent or guardian must provide identification and proof of residency for individuals under 18 and must be present when the card is issued. The minor must be present to be registered or renewed as a checkpoint for identify verification.
In the instance of a patron with multiple addresses, such as the child of divorced parents, the legally designated primary residence will be used to determine eligibility for a Library card. If the application is approved, the card will be issued with the Sugar Grove Library District address and all the Library correspondence will be sent to this address. In the case of joint custody when all addresses fall within the service area of the District, only one Library card will be issued to the patron at the address of their choosing. The name on the residency document must match the name on the photo ID.
What Qualifies as a Photo ID and Proof of Residency?
A photo ID can include any of the following. Applicants for a card must provide at least one of the following forms of identification:
A. Approved Photo IDs
- State issued Driver’s License
- Authorized State Identification
- Matricula Counsular
- FOID Card
- Military Identification Card
- Authorized School Identification Card w/Photo
Applicants for a card must also show at least one of the following documents for residency verification and taxpayer status. The name on the applicants photo ID must match that on the residency document. Electronic versions of the following documents are accepted.
B. Approved Proof of Residency Documents
- Mortgage or lease document
- Property tax bill
- Utility bill dated within the last 60 days: Gas, Electric, Water or Cable
- Rent receipt dated within the last 60 days
- Motor vehicle registration
- Motor vehicle insurance policy or identification card
- Checkbook or pay stub
- Voter Registration Card
- Bank statement
How Long is My Library Card Valid?
Your Sugar Grove Public Library Card is valid for 3 years from the month issued. Services will be suspended for patrons who accumulate over $20.00 in fines and fees until they have cleared the charges.
Can I get an Online Only Card?
You can now register for a temporary 90-day online-only library card that will grant you access to eBooks, eAudiobooks, streaming services, and research databases through the Sugar Grove Public Library. This temporary online-only card is for patrons 13 year of age and older. This card will not be valid for checking out physical materials or registering for programs.
Patrons who register for 90-day temporary online-only library cards are encouraged to email a copy of their photo ID and proof of residency to email@example.com to register for a full access library card. If you do not choose to do so, the temporary card will expire after 90 days and cannot be renewed.
I Don't Live in Sugar Grove but Pay Sugar Grove Taxes, Can I Get a Library Card?
Persons owning property within the district but residing outside of the district may obtain a Non-Resident Taxpayer library card by showing a photo ID from the list of acceptable identification documents and providing a copy of their current paid tax bill for the property. Only one library card will be issued per property.
Can I Get a Library Card for My Business?
A business library card is available to any organizational entity, profit or nonprofit, that owns or rents property in the Sugar Grove Library District. The owner, senior representative, or manager of the business may apply for a card in person using the Application for a Business Library Card.
Appropriate photo identification from the approved list (A. Approved Identification Documents, shown above) must be shown as well as one item showing:
- Business License
- Letter of Incorporation
- Rental agreement
- Utility bill showing designated business name and address
Only one card will be issued per property owner or renter. These cards are for local use only and do not have reciprocal borrowing or inter-library loan privileges.
The Business Card is valid for one year.
What if I Reside Outside the Sugar Grove Library District Boundaries?
Persons residing outside the Sugar Grove Public Library District and not entitled to the services of any tax-supported public library are not eligible to receive a library card from the Sugar Grove Public Library. Under Illinois Library code, non-resident library cards must be purchased at the closest participating public library in the school district in which the non-resident has his or her principal residence. This means residents of Big Rock, IL should go to the Hinckley Public Library in Hinckley, IL to obtain a Non-Resident Library Card.
Can I Use My Library Card From Another Library at the Sugar Grove Public Library?
Yes! The Sugar Grove Public Library participates in the Reciprocal Borrowing Program. Reciprocal Borrowers must present and register the card issued by their home library. Cards must be verified with your home library when service is initiated and verified annually thereafter for continuation of services. Make sure you visit during your home library's open hours so we can verify the status of your account. If you come in while your home library is closed, you will have to come back at another time to register as a Reciprocal Borrower.
The Reciprocal Borrower will have the same rights and responsibilities as a Sugar Grove Public Library District card holder with a few exceptions:
- No ILLs (InterLibrary Loans)
- No digital library access (eBooks, eAudiobooks, and streaming services)
- No remote access to subscription databases
- No borrowing privileges for the Library of Wonderful Things or board games and puzzles
Sugar Grove Public Library resident cardholders receive first priority for all library services and programs.
What Do I Do If I Lost My Card?
If you lost your card, replacement cards can be purchased for $1.00 at the circulation desk.
How Do I Renew My Library Card?
Come to the circulation desk with an approved Photo ID and let us know you need to renew your card. Patrons can request replacement cards for free when they renew their library privileges every three years.
