Now Hiring: Youth Services Librarian, Full Time, 37.5 hours


Position Title: Youth Services Librarian

Full time, Exempt, 37.5 hours with a mix of morning, evening, and weekend shifts

Sugar Grove Public Library District seeks a creative, self-motivated Youth Services Librarian to join our highly collaborative team. This is a new position created to support expanded hours and services made possible by SGPL’s successful 2023 referendum. The Sugar Grove community is excited about more programs for kids and families, and the Youth Services Librarian at SGPL will have a unique opportunity to propose new services and grow existing ones. Reports to the Youth Services Manager. Mix of daytime, evening, and weekend shifts required. Earliest start date is July 8, 2024.

Essential Functions:

  • Plans and presents programming for children ages 0-11 and their caregivers.
  • Delivers outreach services to organizations serving children from birth through elementary school, including two elementary schools in Kaneland Community Unit School District #302.
  • Participates in selection/collection development for children’s collections.
  • Provides excellent front-line reference and reader’s advisory services.
  • Creates print and digital marketing materials for children’s programs and services using Canva.
  • Actively seeks out opportunities for continuing education and professional development. 
  • Serves as Person in Charge (PIC) on a rotating basis.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Current knowledge of titles and trends in children’s literature and programming.
  • General understanding of child development and early literacy concepts.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with technology and willingness to learn new skills as needed.
  • A collaborative attitude and commitment to great customer service.

Education and Experience:

  • Master of Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working with children ages 0-11.
  • At least two years of public or school library experience preferred.
  • Spanish language skills a plus.

Hours and Benefits:

This is a full-time exempt position serving 37.5 hours a week with a mix of shifts including days, nights, and weekends during the Library’s operating hours. This position will begin no earlier than July 8th and the Library’s hours of operations will be increasing at that time. 

Hourly salary range is between $23.00 - $26.00 per hour depending on experience.

The Sugar Grove Public Library District serves 16,114 residents including the Village of Sugar Grove, Sugar Grove Township, and some residents in Montgomery, Aurora, North Aurora, and Elburn. We are located 50 miles west of Chicago, minutes from I-88. Our facility is 26,000 square feet and was built in 2009. The Library is a member of the SWAN consortium and shares resources with 100 other member libraries. The Library is open 50 hours a week: Monday – Thursday: 10am- 8pm, Saturday 10am – 4pm, Sunday 2pm-6pm. Library district voters approved increased operational funding for the budget year beginning July 2024, and we are looking for someone to grow with us and provide a clear vision of library service for our community. Now Hiring: Outreach Services Librarian, Full Time, 37.5 hours


Job Posting: Position Title: Outreach Services Librarian

Full time, Exempt, 37.5 hours with a mix of morning, evening, and weekend shifts

Sugar Grove Public Library District seeks a people-focused, social, and passionate librarian to join our highly collaborative team. This is a new position created to support expanded hours and services made possible by SGPL's successful 2023 referendum. This role will be a mix of on-desk shifts, offering programs to adults, collaborating on larger events with the Youth Department, and most importantly, traveling offsite to provide outreach opportunities for patrons in our 37 square mile District. This position will also have significant marketing assignments as part of successfully reaching all of our patrons. Reports to Adult and Teen Services Manager. Mix of daytime, evening, and weekend shifts required. Earliest start date is July 8, 2024.

Essential Functions:

  • Plans and presents outreach services primarily for adults and seniors, including service to senior living communities, attendance at community events and fairs, homebound delivery, and other outreach opportunities.
  • Presents and collaborates with the local business community and service groups.
  • Creates print and digital marketing materials for programs and services using Canva.
  • Writes marketing pieces.
  • Provides excellent front-line reference and reader's advisory services.
  • Participates in selection/collection development for adult collections.
  • Actively seeks out opportunities for continuing education and professional development. 
  • Serves as Person in Charge (PIC) on a rotating basis.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Experience preferred working with traditionally underserved populations, including such people as those experiencing homelessness, ethnically diverse people, older adults, adult new and non-readers, incarcerated people and ex-offenders, people with disabilities, GLBTQIA+ populations, and ruraly and geographically isolated communities.
  • At least two years of public library experience preferred.
  • Spanish language skills a plus.
